The hiss
White noise for sleep
White noise masks well and hisses. When to use it, when to switch to pink, brown, or rain.
What it is
Equal energy per hertz. It sounds like an untuned radio or a sharp hiss. It covers speech and high clicks better than brown noise because it has more energy up top.
What it is good for
Tinnitus masking and blocking thin walls. Infant studies have used white noise for crying and short sleep bouts — that is not a reason to run a machine loud next to a crib all night. Keep volume conversational or below.
Why many adults leave it
The hiss is fatiguing. Pink and brown keep the masking and lose the ice-pick. Murmur’s “hush” is white under a heavy low-pass — snow, not static.
