How loud

How loud should sleep sounds be?

Masking works at modest levels. All-night 50–60 dB is not free. Headphones, babies, and dawn fade.

A working range

Papers that mention a number often sit around 50–60 dB — a quiet refrigerator, not a club. If you have to raise your voice, it is too loud. If a door still wakes you, raise a little, or add a layer that covers that frequency (speech → green or hush; trucks → brown).

All night vs onset

Sleep Foundation’s own FAQ flags leaving pink on all night as a possible REM cost. Murmur’s 8h timer is for the YouTube-shaped night and for people who already live with a fan. The 15 / 30 / 60 minute fades are the conservative default.

Do not put a phone under a pillow

Apple’s review rules say this out loud (2.4.2). Heat, battery, and hearing. Speakers in the room beat earbuds you fall asleep wearing.
